PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned right wing Alexandre Daigle to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Daigle has seven points and eight penalty minutes in 30 games with the Penguins this season.

The 6-foot, 204-pound Daigle retired for two years after disappointing seasons with Ottawa, Philadelphia, the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay. He came out of retirement and was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in October.

Daigle has 248 career points and 160 penalty minutes in 489 NHL games.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Alexandre Daigle named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins right wing Alexandre Daigle has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 19, 2003. In three games, Daigle scored two goals and added six assists for eight points, to go with 19 shots on goal and a plus-3 rating.

The first overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Daigle assisted on two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, in Wilkes-Barre's 3-2 victory at Hershey on Wednesday evening. He then sparked a pair of comebacks over the weekend, beginning with a goal and two assists as the Penguins erased a 2-1 deficit to defeat Lowell on Friday, 4-2. The next night, Daigle recorded three third-period points on another goal and two assists, but the Pens fell short of Cleveland, 7-5.

In recognition of his achievement, Daigle will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Pocono Pirates Amateur Youth Hockey Club in Daigle's name.

Daigle returned to professional hockey after a two-year absence when he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 4, 2002. The Montreal native has three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 10 games since being assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 28, and 33 points in 26 career AHL games, including a stint with Hartford in 1999-2000. In 489 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, the N.Y. Rangers, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Ottawa, Daigle has recorded 104 goals and 144 assists for 248 points.

Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Binghamton center Jason Spezza, Bridgeport goaltender Rick DiPietro, Grand Rapids center Stacy Roest, Hamilton center Chad Hinz, Hershey right wing Brian Willsie, Houston left wing Jean-Guy Trudel, Lowell center Craig MacDonald, Norfolk goaltender Craig Andersson, Philadelphia center Andre Savage, Providence goaltender Tim Thomas, Rochester center Chris Taylor, San Antonio center Jeff Toms and Syracuse right wing David Ling.
