    Preds deal Skrastins to Colorado

Nashville Predators Executive Vice President/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired a third-round selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Karlis Skrastins.

“Karlis has been a good pro and solid contributor for the Nashville Predators,” said Poile. “With our emphasis on rebuilding the defense, we’ve decided to go with our younger prospects in a move that we think will make us better in the long-term.”

Skrastins, 28 (7/9/74), posted three goals and 10 assists (3g-10a-13pts) in 82 games with Nashville this past season. The Riga, Latvia native recorded 13 goals and 41 assists (13g-41a-54pts) in 307 games with the Predators over the last five seasons.

“Our scouting staff, our coaching staff, our whole organization feels that Jeff Hackett will give us the solid and steady goaltending that we will need to take a run at the Stanley Cup,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “He is also the type of goaltender that will allow us to give Robert Esche enough work to develop into a top goaltender.”

“I’m very excited to come to a place that has some great tradition,” said Hackett. “I’ll be joining a lot of former teammates. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. I played with Mark Recchi, who I’ve kept in very good touch with over the years. I played a lot of years with Eric Weinrich, Jeremy Roenick and Tony Amonte. Everything has happened so fast. I’m just looking forward to coming in and helping the also team be as successful as it can be.”

    So long, Sergei

Agent: Fedorov won't re-sign with Wings
    July 3, 2003

    Say good-bye to Sergei Fedorov.

    BY NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA
    FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

He has decided not to re-sign with the Red Wings, agent Pat Brisson said Wednesday.

"We're basically making it official now: Sergei won't be back in Detroit," Brisson said. "Nothing personal against the Red Wings. He's just moving on."

General manager Ken Holland got the news as he was making calls on other unrestricted free agents. Sources said defenseman Derian Hatcher was the Wings' top target.

"Sorry to hear that," Holland said. "Obviously he was a great player for us for a lot of years. I thought we made tremendous offers. It's unfortunate that Pat and Sergei feel this way."

The Wings helped Fedorov defect from the Soviet Union in 1990, sneaking him out the side door of a hotel after an exhibition in Portland, Ore., and flying him to Detroit in owner Mike Ilitch's private jet.

Fedorov spent 13 seasons with the Wings. He scored 400 regular-season goals and 50 playoff goals. He had 554 regular-season assists and 113 playoff assists. He won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 1994 and the Selke as the league's best defensive forward in '94 and '96.

But he was often criticized for not showing up every night, and his off-ice issues received as much attention as his immense talent, from his lengthy holdout in 1997-98, to his father's comments to the Russian press, to his complaints about playing time, to his relationship with Anna Kournikova to what he drove and how he drove it.

"Sergei feels loyalties to his fans, and he has great memories," Brisson said. "He loves all the great moments he's had in Detroit. He won three Cups in six years. It's hard to match.

"But he's moved on. Thirteen years ago, when he defected, he felt free. He feels the same way right now. He's ready for a challenge."

Brisson said Fedorov was unavailable for comment.

"He'll express himself later," Brisson said.

Ilitch personally offered Fedorov a five-year, $50-million contract in November. Fedorov didn't accept it; Brisson has said Fedorov asked the Wings to wait, because he was splitting with Kournikova and his agents at the time.

After the Wings were swept in the first round of the playoffs by Anaheim, they offered Fedorov a four-year, $40-million deal. Brisson made proposals, but the Wings held firm. Talks continued into the night Monday but the sides remained far apart.

Brisson and Holland declined to comment on the negotiations Wednesday. But this week Brisson has said he felt the Wings never made Fedorov a priority and Holland has pointed to the offers as proof they had.

Asked if Fedorov was close to signing elsewhere, Brisson said, "I can't really say." But Brisson said there was a lot of interest in Fedorov.

"I have had a lot of conversations, because teams are kind of surprised to see arguably the best player in the world available," Brisson said. "He's a superstar, so teams are wondering what's going on. Despite the climate and what everyone says, he's still a tremendous, tremendous asset."

Holland's position as recently as Wednesday afternoon was that the Wings wanted Fedorov back, but were preparing to move on themselves.

Since free agency began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Holland has called every agent representing a player the Wings might want. Among the players available as of Wednesday evening were forwards Paul Kariya, Joe Nieuwendyk, Adam Oates and Teemu Selanne and defensemen Hatcher, Greg de Vries and Ken Klee.

"Some we've got interest in; some it's window shopping and tire-kicking," Holland said. "I'm gauging the market."

The Canadian network TSN reported on its Web site the Wings had offered Hatcher a four-year, $22-million deal and might have been prepared to go higher. Holland declined to comment on specific players.

NOTEBOOK: Holland said told Dominik Hasek's agent, Rich Winter, that he needed to know by the middle of next week if Hasek was coming out of retirement.
