KINGS SIGN VETERAN LUC ROBITAILLE
7/24/2003
EL SEGUNDO, CA. - The Los Angeles Kings have signed free agent left wing Luc Robitaille – the highest-scoring left winger in the history of the NHL with 631 career goals -- to a one-year contract, Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.
“We are very happy to have Luc back in Los Angeles with the Kings,” said Taylor. “He has had great success in a Kings uniform and has proven to be one of the great scorer’s in league history. His experience and leadership abilities will be a great influence on our younger players as well.”
“My family and I are very excited to be returning to the Kings” said Robitaille, from his off-season home in Park City, Utah. “The Kings is where it all started for me, and the fans of Los Angeles have always treated me and my family so well. I look forward to playing for them once again.”
Originally drafted by the Kings in the ninth-round (171st overall) in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, Robitaille, 37, has played 12 of his 17 NHL seasons in Los Angeles as a King. The leader in numerous offensive franchise regular season and playoff categories, Robitaille has amassed 1,319 career regular season points (631-688=1319) in 1,286 games, including 1,079 points as a King (520-559=1079) in 932 games (second on the Kings all time scoring list behind Marcel Dionne – 1,307). In addition, he has played in 159 career post-season games and recorded 127 points (58-69=127), with 87 of those points (41-46=87) coming in 94 career playoff games with the Kings.
A member of the Detroit Red Wings the past two seasons after leaving the Kings as a free agent in 2001, Robitaille was a key part of Detroit’s Stanley Cup Championship team in 2002, when he scored 30 goals for the 12th time in his career, including his 600th career goal. This past season he registered 31 points (11-20=31) in 81 games.
An eight-time NHL All-Star, Robitaille played with the Kings from 1986-1994 before being traded by the Kings to the Pittsburgh Penguins. After short stints with the Penguins and in New York with the Rangers, Robitaille returned to the Kings prior to the 1997 season and played with the Kings through 2001.
The 6-1, 215-pound native of Montreal will again wear his popular No. 20 when the Kings open training camp in September.
