Vancouver, B.C. -- Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Brian Burke announced today that the Canucks have acquired goaltender Johan Hedberg from Pittsburgh in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Hedberg, 30, played in 41 games for the Penguins last season posting a record of 14 wins, 22 losses, four ties and a goals against average of 3.14. He has played in a total of 116 regular season games in his NHL career, with a record of 46 wins, 57 losses, 12 ties and a career goals against average of 2.88.

Hedberg played in all 18 of the Penguins playoff games in 2000-2001, his rookie season. He posted a record of nine wins, nine losses and a goals against average of 2.30. Hedberg, who had only nine games of NHL experience at that point backstopped the Penguins to series wins over the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres before the Penguins lost the Eastern Conference final to the New Jersey Devils in five games.

The 6-foot-0, 193 pound, native of Leksand, Sweden, was originally drafted by Philadelphia Flyers, in round nine, 218th overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft. After being drafted he remained in Sweden for four years. The Flyers sent him to the San Jose Sharks for a draft pick in 1998, and in 2001, he was moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a deal for Jeff Norton.
