Malkin awaits next move by Russian pro team

PITTSBURGH -- A Russian arbitration panel ruled that Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin violated his contract by leaving his Russian pro team to play in the NHL.

The ruling issued Friday appears to be meaningless unless Malkin's former team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, can find a United States court to uphold the decision. The Russian Super League club also could sue the NHL or the Penguins.

Malkin, who was not represented at the Russian Ice Hockey Federation arbitration hearing, has one week to appeal the ruling to Russia's arbitration court for sports.

Neither the Penguins nor the NHL would comment on the arbitration panel ruling. Malkin declined to talk about it.

Malkin, a 20-year-old forward who starred for Russia during the Torino Olympics in February, said he was pressured into signing a one-year contract with Magnitogorsk earlier this summer despite his avowed intention to play in the NHL. Malkin was the No. 2 pick in the June 2004 NHL draft by Pittsburgh.

Days after agreeing to the Magnitogorsk deal, Malkin skipped out on the team when it arrived in Finland for training camp last month and turned up a few days later in Los Angeles. He worked out there for several weeks before arriving in Pittsburgh for training camp nearly two weeks ago.

Malkin's agents, J.P. Barry and Pat Brisson, contend the forward followed Russian law by giving two weeks notice and resigning from his job. The NHL has allowed teams to sign players who exercise this legal option.

Because Malkin left Russia and is in the Penguins' camp, Magnitogorsk team officials have said they are resigned to losing him, but they apparently want to be compensated. The NHL and the Russian hockey federation have been unable to reach a transfer agreement that would pay Russian teams when their players leave for the NHL.

The transfer agreement between the NHL and Europe's hockey federations call for teams to receive $200,000 when they lose a player. Magnitogorsk argues Malkin's rights are worth at least 10 times that much.

The Penguins, Malkin's agents and the NHL are awaiting Magnitogorsk's next legal move. The Russian team could ask a U.S. court to uphold the arbitration panel ruling or sue either the Penguins, the NHL or both for compensation. Magnitogorsk has hired New York-based lawyer Alexander Berkovich to handle its case.

Malkin is one of three NHL rookies who handed in resignation letters and left their Russian teams to play in North America this season.

The Russian arbitration panel ruled Sept. 9 that Andrei Taratukhin, of the Calgary Flames, and Alexei Mikhonov, of the Edmonton Oilers, violated their Russian Super League contracts with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl when they resigned their jobs and left the team.

Oilers sign Joffrey Lupul for three years


The Edmonton Oilers have signed right wing Joffrey Lupul to a three-year contract.

Lupul, a 6’1”, 200-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, enters his first season with the Oilers and third in the NHL. Drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the 22-year-old forward enjoyed his most productive season in 2005-06, scoring 28-25-53 with 48 penalty minutes in 81 games with Anaheim. He finished the season fourth in scoring on the Anaheim roster and established career-highs in goals, assists, points, powerplay goals (12) and shorthanded goals (2).

Ex-Leafs enforcer Tie Domi to retire

TORONTO -- Former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Tie Domi has decided to retire, The Canadian Press reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed source.

The source told the CP that Domi, a Maple Leafs fan favorite -- and favorite target in opposing NHL arenas -- for his aggressive style of play, will officially announce his retirement Tuesday afternoon.

Domi, 36, despite his fan favorite status, was bought out by the Leafs earlier this summer as the new-look NHL empahized offense and fighting declined. He had only five goals and 11 assists in 2005-06 as the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs.

He played 1,020 career games in the league with the Leafs, New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets.

Malkin suffers upper body injury in NHL debut

MONCTON, New Brunswick -- Evgeni Malkin was injured during his first NHL preseason game Wednesday night when he collided with Pittsburgh teammate John LeClair early in the second period of the Penguins' 5-4 win over Philadelphia.

Malkin was not available for comment after the game, but was seen leaving the Moncton Coliseum on his own without a sling. The team said the 20-year-old Russian rookie center was taken to a hospital for further evaluation of an upper-body injury.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero said Malkin will be re-evaluated Thursday in Pittsburgh, but could not be more specific about the injury.

"At this point anything else would be speculation," Shero said. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow. Frankly, I was happy he got up considering the way he went down."

Penguins veteran winger Mark Recchi also was sent to hospital after he was hit with a high stick in the first period.

Malkin was injured after making a dazzling pass to LeClair. The veteran winger, after missing a great scoring chance, crashed into the boards behind the net and took out Malkin in the process. The Russian catapulted over LeClair and landed hard on the ice. A hush came over the crowd as Malkin, the No. 2 overall pick behind Alexander Ovechkin in 2004, lay sprawled on the ice for 3-4 minutes.

"Malkin made a great pass, but I caught an edge and lost my balance," LeClair said. "It's disappointing to see a rising star get hurt like that."

Malkin got up and skated off the ice, but was favoring his left arm.

"It's never fun to see that happen, especially in his first game," Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby said. "Hopefully, we'll get him back soon. He looked good out there, even on the play he got hurt. He looked real comfortable playing at this level."

Malkin had an assist on Sergei Gonchar's first-period goal and also displayed a pair of sensational inside-out moves later in the opening period.

Malkin was making his much-anticipated debut after his controversial departure from Russia, a matter that remains in the hands of lawyers on both sides of the ocean because he signed a contract with Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk before also signing a three-year deal with the Penguins.

Gonchar finished with two goals and Crosby, Ryan Malone and Colby Armstrong also scored for Pittsburgh, 1-1 in preseason play. Mike Richards scored twice and Jeff Carter and Mark Cullen added goals for Philadelphia in the Flyers' preseason opener.

Jocelyn Thibault went all the way in goal for the Penguins, making 23 saves.

Robert Esche went two periods in goal for the Flyers, giving up three goals on 22 shots. Rookie Martin Houle then allowed two goals on nine shots.

NHL: Greiss und Pätzold nach Worcester

Doug Wilson, General-Manager der San Jose Sharks, gab heute bekannt, dass insgesamt fünf Spieler im Trainingscamp der Sharks zumindest vorerst durchs Raster gefallen sind.

Verteidiger Derek Joslin wird nach Ottawa ins Juniorenteam zurückkehren. Die beiden Rechtsaußen Lukas Kaspar und Mike Iggulden nehmen ab Montag am Trainingscamp der Worcester Sharks teil.

Gleiches gilt auch für die beiden deutschen Goalies Dimitrij Pätzold und Thomas Greiss. Beide können sich beim Farmteam in Worcester wieder für die San Jose Sharks empfehlen.

Jürgen, die Habs schlagen ist für mich so wie für Dich wenn der AEV die Hatschis schnupft... Da ist es scheißegal was für ein Spiel das ist. Als Leafs Fan gibt es zwei Todfeinde, die Habs und die Sens. Gegen die Habs, mehr Tradition gibt es nicht im Hockeysport auf dieser Welt und gegen die Sens, die Battle of Ontario. Beide spielen in unserer Division. Und jedes Kind und JEDER Spieler weiß, wenn er in einem der Vereine spielt, was es bedeutet wenn eines dieser Derbies ansteht. Da ist dann selbst ein Pre-Season Game mit 21' Zuschauern ausverkauft... Und ausserdem kann man nie genug Siege auf seinem Konto haben. Gewinnen ist das schönste im Sport, steigert das Selbstvertrauen und fördert die Moral innerhalb einer Mannschaft, macht den Fans Lust auf die Saison und sorgt für ein, zugegebener maßen immer, ausverkauftes Air Canada Centre Das man nicht zwangsläufig von der Vorbereitung auf die Saison schließen kann ist klar, in NA erst recht nicht. Aber es spiegelt eine Tendenz wieder, wie die neuen sich einfügen, welchen Part sie spielen und was der neue Coach sich unter Hockey spielen so vorstellt. Am Sonntag gegen die Sens in Halifax (3:2 für die Sens) hat z. B. die gesamte Defense und ein Teil der Offense nicht gespielt und nur die Jungen durften ran. Und die haben sich den Arsch aufgerissen und gekämpft. Weils gegen nen Rivalen ging und du zuhause nicht mehr Respekt und Anerkennung bekommen kannst wie wenn du in solchen Spielen einfach alles gibst.

Ich kann dich verstehen das du jedes Spiel gegen die Hustis gewinnen willst und das diese 4 Spiele im Jahr dir wichtiger sind als alle anderen...

Rick DiPietro hat bei den Islandern einen Vertrag bis 2021 unterschrieben. Laengster Vertrag der NHL-Geschichte

DiPietro unterschreibt Rekordvertrag

Er ist erst 24 Jahre alt, und dennoch hat Rick DiPietro in der nordamerikanischen Eishockey-Liga NHL schon für eine Bestleistung gesorgt. Der Torhüter der New York Islanders schloss einen bemerkenswerten Vertrag ab.

New York - DiPietro und sein Club banden sich bis 2021 aneinander. Mit einer Laufzeit von 15 Jahren ist es der längste Vertrag, der jemals in der 1917 gegründeten NHL abgeschlossen wurde. Das Gehaltsvolumen beträgt insgesamt 67,5 Millionen Dollar. Wenn DiPietros Vertrag ausläuft, wird er 39 Jahre alt sein. Mit seinem jährlichen Gehalt von 4,5 Millionen Dollar steigt er in den Kreis der bestverdienenden NHL-Torhüter auf. Mit 6,75 Millionen Dollar pro Jahr erhält Nikolaj Chabibulin von den Chicago Blackhawks am meisten.

DiPietro war 2000 als erster Keeper in der NHL-Geschichte als Nummer eins im Junioren-Draft gezogen worden und spielt seit sechs Jahren für die Islanders. Bei den Olympischen Spielen in Turin 2006 stand er im Tor der USA. Bisheriger Rekordhalter in punkto Vertragslaufzeit war DiPietros Teamkollege Alexej Jaschin: Der Center aus Russland hatte 2001 für 87,5 Millionen Dollar über zehn Jahre bei den New York Islanders unterschrieben.

Übertroffen wird DiPietro im nordamerikanischen Profisport einzig vom Basketballer Earvin "Magic" Johnson, der sich 1981 gleich für 25 Jahre an die Los Angeles Lakers band. Der HIV-infizierte NBA-Profi musste seine Karriere allerdings 1996 endgültig beenden, nachdem er viereinhalb Jahre zuvor schon einmal mit dem Profisport aufgehört hatte.

Flyers G Niittymaki to try to play with cortisone shots

VOORHEES, N.J. -- Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki will receive cortisone shots in his injured left hip and try to make it through the season without needing surgery.

Niittymaki, who tore the labrum in his left hip during practice Tuesday, could have had surgery immediately, which would have sidelined him for up to three months. Instead, Niittymaki and Philadelphia trainer Jim McCrossin will fly to Nashville on Friday to get the first of three injections, as recommended by hip specialist Dr. Thomas Byrd.

McCrossin said the injections would be given Friday, in December and before the playoffs.

"That would be ideal for us," McCrossin said Thursday. "We'll keep our fingers crossed that the injection and the rehab he will be doing is going to keep him healthy all through the season and we'll do the surgery in the offseason."

Niittymaki tied a Flyers rookie record with 23 wins last season. McCrossin said the shots and rigorous rehab should allow Niittymaki to keep playing.

"With the injection, if it does take, that would be great," McCrossin said. "On the other side, if it doesn't take, then we'd have to obviously look at surgery."

Avs forward Konowalchuk retires after heart tests

DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Konowalchuk retired Friday after tests showed he has a disease that can lead to irregular heart rhythms.

"After a complete evaluation from a number of different physicians and experts associated with this condition, we decided that this was the best and only alternative for me," Konowalchuk said in a written statement.

"As much as I'll miss the game of hockey and all that it's provided for my family and I, my health was the No. 1 priority," he said.

The team said Konowalchuk has Long QT Syndrome, a genetic disease involving electrical conduction that can lead to irregular heart rhythms.

Konowalchuk, 33, had 171 goals and 225 assists in 790 games over 13 seasons. He had 52 playoff appearances, with nine goals and 12 assists.

He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1991 and acquired by the Avalanche in 2003.

The Avalanche also said forward Brad May would be out four to six months after undergoing reconstructive shoulder surgery on Thursday. May was injured in a preseason game Monday.

Morrow replaces Modano as Stars captain

DALLAS -- Brenden Morrow got a new contract last week from the Dallas Stars. Now he has a new title: captain.

The Stars named Morrow their captain Friday, a move that relegated Mike Modano to being an assistant captain with Sergei Zubov. Modano, the franchise's career leader in scoring and games played, had been the captain since 2003.

Morrow, a 27-year-old left wing, signed a $24.6 million, six-year extension last week that will keep him with the Stars through the 2012-13 season. Morrow has appeared in 451 career games since being a first-round pick by Dallas in 1997.

"He's entering the prime of his career. We just thought that this was the time to do it," general manager Doug Armstrong said.

"This is an honor and a privilege," Morrow said. "I realize how important it is to have a group of leaders that rally together to accomplish great things. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead for this team and for me."

Morrow last season set career highs with 42 assists and 65 points. He was the only player in the NHL last season with more than 20 goals and 125 penalty minutes.

In addition to Modano, Stars newcomers Jeff Halpern and Eric Lindros have been captains in the past.

Modano, the No. 1 overall pick in 1988 and one of the most recognized athletes in Dallas, said he had a lot of different emotions about the switch. But he said he understood and supports Morrow.

The role of captain was given to Modano during the summer of 2003 when Derian Hatcher left the team in free agency. Morrow is the club's fifth captain since the Stars moved to Dallas in 1993.
