Lemieux will return to Penguins
PITTSBURGH (pittsburghpenguins.com) -- Pittsburgh Penguins owner and captain Mario Lemieux announced today that he will return for his 16th season as a player.
Already a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Lemieux has recorded 682 goals, 1,010 assists and 1,692 points in 879 career games, all with the Penguins. He is a six-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as NHL scoring champion and three-time winner of the Hart Trophy as league MVP. He also has led the Penguins to two Stanley Cups.
Lemieux, the first pick overall in the 1984 NHL entry draft, will turn 38 in October.
"I feel great, I've been working out and I'm really looking forward to getting back on the ice," Lemieux said. "With some of the guys we have back and some of the young players we have coming up, it should be a very exciting year for us."
Lemieux led an ownership group that bought the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999. He also serves the franchise as CEO and chairman of the board.
The 6-4, 230-pound centerman finished eighth in the NHL in scoring last season with 28 goals and 63 assists for 91 points in 67 games.
Lemieux is closing in on career milestones of 700 goals and 1,700 points. He needs 18 goals for 700 and just eight points for 1,700.
