"While the new offer still contains some form of salary cap, sources told Sportsnet hockey analyst John Davidson the league is being more flexible by introducing the tax to a soft and hard cap system.
Sources said the proposal will include floor and ceiling numbers that will serve as a boundary for NHL teams to spend within -- the top side being the hard cap. A soft cap would be set somewhere in between the two and teams willing to go above that number (without exceeding the the hard cap) would have to pay a tax.
What appears to be a starting point for a new direction of negotiations, the offer should provide the NHL and its players' association with a system they can use to build towards a workable solution.
If a deal is agreed upon, the NHL will be looking at a 30-game season which will begin sometime around February 12-14. The games would be split equally as home and road contests and franchises would only play teams in their own conference."

NHL-Saison vor Absage?
Als Starttermin für eine 30-Spiele/Team andauernde Saison wird inzwischen Ende Februar/Anfang März gehandelt. Für Bob Goodenow heißt es dann wohl bald "good bye"...TSN Insiders Jan. 31
Burke opened up, and he was optimistic.
1. 6 year deal, short year this year and six more
2. Luxury tax is on the table
3. Profit sharing; if it tops 100 million it's a 50/50 share
4. Arbitration; rights for clubs and salaries
Still linkage apparently. Interesting point, any lying, million dollar fine and a first round pick, second time you get caught it's 5 million and three first round picks. Healy is still not optimistic. He notes that revenues can't be tracked or controlled; suggests a higher percentage of revenues that they could count and be sure about, like ticket sales or concessions. McKenzie notes that they should have done this 5 months ago.
Burke really sounds optimistic, and even Healy seems to think that there are some creative options available. That's interesting to me that Healy seems to think that there are opportunities available-he's clearly talking to the NHLPA, and he's been roundly negative up to this point.
