Press Release
07/01/05
The Guildford Flames ice hockey club have become another in a string of European outfits to capitalise on the lockout situation that is forcing many of the top ice hockey players in the world to search for employment outside North America. The Surrey based club are pleased to announce the signing of forward David Oliver who iced last season for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League, scoring 7 goals and 5 assists in 36 matches. Over the course of 8 NHL seasons, Oliver has played 230 games, collecting 49 goals and 49 assists. In 1991, he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers from the University of Michigan where he played 152 collegiate games through 4 seasons, registering more than 200 points. In his first NHL season in 1994-95 he played in 44 games and had 16 goals and 14 assists and followed that up with his first full NHL season in 1995-96 when he had 20 goals and 19 assists in 80 matches. His NHL tour has included stops with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes and most Recently with the Stars. Over that same period he has also spent time in top minor pro leagues, the American and International Hockey Leagues, most notably with the Houston Aeros where he registered 127 points in 160 games. Guildford will not be his first European stint, after 2001-2002 when he signed with the Munich Barons of the German Elite League.
Recent offensive struggles have sent the Flames searching for a gifted scoring forward and the club is confident that Oliver is just the man for the job. The club is hopeful that Oliver will be in the line up for the Flames home doubleheader against Bracknell Bees and Sheffield Steelers on January 15th and 16th.
Flames Head Coach Stan Marple commented:
We are very happy to have secured the services of an established offensive performer like David. He has earned a reputation for his ability to put up good numbers in any league in the world when he is given ice time. There is no question here that he is a capable offensive go to guy and that is the role we will throw him into. This will be one of his first opportunities where a club uses 3 lines instead of 4 so he will get more ice time on a game-by-game basis and we believe he will flourish under those circumstances. His presence will help to take some of the pressure off our other skilled forwards and that can only help the club as a whole.
Aber obwohl er 03/04 noch 36 NHL Spiele für Dallas gemacht hat, ist er, glaube ich, auf dem absteigenden Ast. Mit 34 ist er auch nicht mehr der Jüngste.
