Penguins edge Ducks for No. 1 pick Crosby

NEW YORK -- Sidney Crosby is a week away from joining Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins beat out the remaining 29 NHL teams Friday in an unprecedented draft lottery that gave every club a chance to get the first pick and nab Crosby -- the 17-year-old phenom from the Canadian juniors.

He will be chosen first next Saturday in Ottawa.

Pittsburgh joined Columbus, Buffalo and the New York Rangers with three balls in the 48-ball bin. The lottery was weighted to give teams that struggled in recent years a better chance.

The Penguins used that and the four-leaf clover general manager Craig Patrick carried in his palm to their advantage, edging Anaheim for No. 1.

Pittsburgh has already said it will take Crosby.

"I think he's a fantastic fit," Patrick said. "To be able to add someone of Sidney's talent, my mind goes round and round with possibilities."

Crosby has been the MVP two straight years while playing for Rimouski in the Canadian Hockey League. He has 120 goals and 183 assists in 121 games.

Now he'll get a chance to play with Lemieux, who stars for and owns the Penguins.

"We trained together and skated together," Crosby said. "He's been great just to be around him. To see the way he handled himself, I learned a lot."

Crosby könnte so etwas wie der Retter der Franchise werden. Nicht nur, daß sich jetzt die Aufmerksamkeit der Medien in nächster Zeit auf die Penguins konzentrieren dürfte, auch der Zuschauerschwund scheint dadurch gestoppt zu werden. Zudem haben bereits einige Agenten bei Pittsburgh angefragt, deren Klienten großes Interesse hätten, mit Lemieux und Crosby zusammenzuspielen. Dank des neuen CBA ist Pittsburgh ja auch wieder wettbewerbsfähig. Möglicherweise wird es nicht bei 1-2 Free Agents bleiben. Bereits seit Wochen wird gemunkelt, daß neben Recchi auch Kovalev und Straka zurückkehren könnten. Auf dem Papier sieht es für die Pens diese Saison zumindest vielversprechend aus. Vielleicht läßt sich auf diesem Wege sogar ein Weggang aus Pittsburgh vermeiden. Das Interesse am Bau einer neuen Arena dürfte jetzt zumindest nicht geringer geworden sein.

Fazit: Crosby kommt genau zur richtige Zeit zu einem der Clubs, die in der "alten" NHL mit am schlechtesten aussahen. Der Draft hat seinen Sinn und Zweck diese Saison ganz besonders erfüllt.

Ducks shopping the 2nd overall pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have no intention of trading the first overall pick in Saturday's NHL entry draft, but the finalist in the Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes is shopping the second overall pick, and shopping it hard.

Anaheim general manager Brian Burke said he has no qualms about trading the No. 2 pick...for the right price, of course.

"I've already gotten eight to 10 calls but I haven't heard anything so far that would cause us to move it, not even close," the Mighty Ducks' GM told TSN. "We will shop this pick. We have a lot of kids ready to step in for us -- Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Joffrey Lupul and Ladislav Smid -- and if we can trade the (No. 2) pick outright for an established player who is a good fit for us, we will do it. And if we get offers to move down a few spots and we can get another (draft) pick, we can do that too. It's really wide open. We want to see what's out there."

If the Ducks decide not to trade the pick for an established player, they are believed to be looking to make a choice from a group of five prospects that includes: Sudbury forward Benoit Pouliot, Owen Sound forward Bobby Ryan, Vancouver Giant forward Gilbert Brule and a pair of defencemen -- Jack Johnson of the U.S. U-18 program and Sudbury's Marc Staal.
If the Ducks feel there's a good chance they could get one of those players at a draft position lower than No. 2, it's possible they'll trade down if they find a partner willing to pay some sort of premium to be guaranteed to get the next-best prospect after No. 1 pick Sidney Crosby.


"Hey, I would be happy to trade up or down in this draft," Burke said with a laugh, knowing there's no chance the Penguins are prepared to move the No. 1 pick and the right to draft Crosby.With the Crosby coronation a foregone conclusion at the draft in Ottawa on Saturday, what the Ducks do with the No. 2 overall pick may well provide the most excitement of the day.
