Darby longs for time with family Homesick Moose thrilled about road trip out east
by Gary Lawless, Winnipeg Free Press FOR most pro hockey players with some time in the NHL, another trip to Syracuse holds as much interest as a naked walk down Portage Avenue in mid-February.
For Manitoba Moose forward Craig Darby, however, his club's upcoming eastern road swing through Syracuse and Rochester is tantamount to an NHL recall. Nothing could be more welcome.
Darby, a veteran of 196 NHL games and 776 AHL/IHL games, has spent this season with the Moose while his wife and two children have remained at the family home in Albany, N.Y. They'll be in Syracuse and Rochester next week with dad and the Moose, and Darby, who banged in a pair of goals Wednesday night against the Toronto Marlies, can't wait.
"I've had lots of chances all season and things haven't worked out as well as I thought they would, but hopefully the last games of the season and into the playoffs the puck will go in for me," said Darby, who has 14 goals and 33 assists in 72 games heading into tonight's home game against the Grand Rapids Griffins. Darby admitted yesterday having his family so far away has been stressful.
"There's no question. When things aren't going well, and you don't have your family to back you up, knowing that they're missing you and you're missing things at home, it's been tough," said Darby. "My wife wants me home, I want to be home. But I have to take care of business first. Playoffs extend the season and my wife doesn't to a certain degree want that. But she knows I want to win and she wants me to win. So I have to do my best and take care of family in the off-season."
Darby, who at times this season has had difficulty hiding his homesickness, says seeing his family next week and having the playoffs just around the corner has him in an excellent frame of mind these days.
"When I see the family next week, it'll be great for me. It's been five weeks since I saw them last and that's been difficult," said the former Montreal Canadiens centre. "I can see the family and then it's down to business after that. Just a few more regular-season games and then it's down to the playoffs. I can get the kid fix and get down to business."
Moose coach Alain Vigneault says the club needs Darby to be in form if the club is to succeed down the stretch.
"It's really good to see him putting numbers on the board lately," said Vigneault. "We need our top players to be top. Simple as that. We need our goalies to be good and our best players to be strong. We're no different than anyone else in that regard."
Darby said this is the last season he'll spend without his family at his side.
"This is a decision my wife and I made and we're dealing with it. I missed all of my son's hockey games this year and (yesterday) is my daughter's birthday," said the 33-year-old. "It's been tough to miss but it's something we have to deal with. But this is the last time I'll do it this way. No matter where I go, they'll come with me. Europe, wherever, they'll come with me."
