Danish leader Damgaard anchors power play
Damgaard's importance to the Danish squad cannot be exaggerated
By Peter Westermark
Denmark is gearing up for its most important game to date in the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Facing Ukraine at the Khodynka Arena in Moscow today, the Danes cannot afford a loss if they are to qualify for the next round. Having played in the Relegation Round for two straight years, Denmark is desperate to avoid that fate this time around.
Captain Jesper Damgaard will be there to lead the blueline. After the two opening losses versus Finland and Russia, Damgaard leads the team with one goal and one assist, and has eight shots on net. Versus Ukraine, it will be a more even battle, and the power play will be key to Danish success.
Damgaard is a veteran of four top division IIHF World Championships
"That's supposed to be our bread and butter," said Damgaard after the 6-2 loss to Finland. "It's important for us that we stay out of the penalty box and that they go into it... and then we have to score."
In the game versus Finland, the Danish power play occasionally looked good as Damgaard led the first unit on the blueline alongside other big Danish names like Kim Staal, Frans Nielsen, Morten Green, and Christoffer Kjaergaard. The five-man unit moved the puck well and had good mobility. It managed to score two goals against the tough Finns, although technically the second one came just after Finland's Sean Bergenheim stepped out of the box.
"We have played together for a couple of years now," said Damgaard. "We are moving the puck quite well and shooting quite a lot."
The big 31-year-old rearguard has a wealth of experience from top European leagues. He is recognized as a reliable two-way defenseman, and respected in the Swedish Elitserien after stints with Malmö and Mod. He has also spent a total of three seasons in the DEL, including this year with the Augsburger Panthers.
"It wasn't my best year," said Damgaard. "We were last in the league all season and lost a lot of games. That weighs heavily on your confidence, and then you don't play well."
Damgaard finished up the year with a three-week stint in Switzerland with HC Lugano, but quickly signed a three-year deal with Danish club Rödovre.
"I had a good offer from the Swedish Elitserien, but I felt that after 15 years abroad it was time to move home," Damgaard said. "It was time to be somewhere where the family can be safe, where the kids can start school and my wife can pursue a career.
"And they are starting to pay well in Denmark too. All the national team players are full-time professionals now. I think we have passed Italy and Norway in terms of the quality of our league, and I think we're about the same level as Austria now."
So there is a lot to be excited about in Danish hockey. The junior teams have qualified for the top division of the U18 and U20 IIHF World Championships, and the league is improving rapidly. But one thing the Danes need is more depth. The tip of the Danish spear is sharp, as exhibited by the Danish first power play unit, but they are sensitive to injuries, and they don't have a big pool of players to choose from.
"We must get deeper, but we have a lot of young players in Sweden and Canada who show a lot of promise," said Damgaard. "Give them two or three years, and things could be really good."
Really good for the Danes would be a Swiss-like finish (circa eighth) at the IIHF World Championship. But for now, it's all about avoiding the Relegation Round for Damgaard and his jolly Danes.
