Statement from Dan Snyder's parents

Graham and LuAnn Snyder read the following statement to the media following the funeral Friday for their son Dan.

We are very deeply moved by the show of love and support that we have received from everyone during this most difficult time. The number of people who have come here to celebrate the life of our son Dan has moved us beyond words. We first want to thank Grady Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care they provided for our son and our family. We knew Dan was getting the best possible care, not because of who he was but because of the type of first-class facility that they run. The entire staff demonstrated so much compassion and comfort for Dan and for our entire family. Our needs were met before we ever knew we had them. County hospitals like Grady that specialize in trauma care need a tremendous amount of support and resources. They're not funded the way the provincial medical system is here in Canada. We encourage people who would like to make donations to do so in Dan's memory to the Henry W. Grady Foundation so that people can continue to receive the excellent care that our son Dan did.

Dan was an inspiration to us -- our entire family and to so many lives he touched along the way. Dan had a saying he would use when times got tough, which he used recently. When he was told that he needed ankle surgery before the start of Thrashers training camp, he didn't want to have surgery because he knew it would set him back and he knew he would have to start the season some time in late October or early November. He told me about it on the phone and, though he knew he had to get his ankle fixed, he simply said, "Well, I guess I'll just have to suck it up."

The friendship between Dan and Dany Heatley was very special. The common thread they shared through playing hockey made them close in ways that only teammates can describe. He always talked about his friend and roommate and he relished the time they spent together and celebrated the successes that they shared on and off the ice with such joy.

We are all human beings and we know that humans make mistakes. We want you to know that we do not lay blame on Dany Heatley for the accident that took our son from us. Dany is a good person and no one feels more sorry for what happened than he does. Forgiveness is also a part of being human and we know there is nothing to gain from harboring resentment or anger towards others. We are here to support him through this difficult time and know that he too is hurting so much.

We also would like thank everyone once again for the prayers and kind words of support through all of this. The Thrashers family, the entire hockey world have extended every possible means of help to us and we sincerely thank them. We also would like to thank the media for their discretion and for allowing us to maintain our privacy. In closing, we also would like to thank the town of Elmira, where we come from. The support we've received and will continue to receive is what will keep us strong and will keep Dan's memory living in our hearts forever. Thank you.

Dany Heatley Returns To The Ice

As part of his rehabilitation process, Dany Heatley took to the ice for the first time this morning for a light skate at the Thrashers practice facility in Duluth, Ga. Following the skate, Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell addressed the media. As Heatley moves forward with his daily rehabilitation, he will continue to include light skating as part of his program. On most days, there will be an on-ice component to his routine, but there is no set schedule for on-ice activities and periodically he will not skate at all. Photo gallery and audio comments from Waddell will be available shortly.

Heatley expected to play Wednesday

Dany Heatley is expected to play tomorrow night for the Atlanta Thrashers, TSN has learned.

Sources told TSN that as long as Heatley made it through today's practice without any problems, he would be inserted for tomorrow night's game at home against the St. Louis Blues. An official announcement is expected later today, provided there were no problems in practice.

Heatley is still awaiting word on charges in the auto accident that claimed the life of teammate Dan Snyder, but his legal situation will not prevent him from returning to active duty. The prosecuting attorney's office in Atlanta has been made aware of Heatley's anticipated return to the ice tomorrow night. It is expected that Heatley will be permitted to travel with the Thrashers and leave the country for games in Canada.

There is no word on when the attorney's office will make a decision on what charges to proceed with.

In the meantime, though, Heatley's hockey career is set to resume.

Heatley returns to Thrashers' lineup

Four months after surviving a car crash that killed teammate Dan Snyder, Atlanta star Dany Heatley will play his first game of the season when the Thrashers host the St. Louis Blues.

The NHL on TSNs pre-game show will include live coverage of his return to the ice at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt, prior to the start of the featured game between the Stars and Senators.

The 23-year-old Heatley tore two knee ligaments and broke his jaw in the accident, while Snyder died from head injuries.

Heatley was charged with vehicular homicide and test results showed he consumed a small amount of alcohol before the crash. His blood alcohol content was less than 0.015 percent, below Georgia's legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Because Heatley wasn't drunk and Snyder's relatives said they forgave him, prosecutors could decide the crash was an accident, with no need to pursue felony charges, which carry sentences from three to 15 years.

The case remains under investigation and a final decision on charges has not been made, Erik Friedly, a spokesman for the Fulton County district attorney, said Tuesday.

Heatley had surgery in October to repair the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee, and skated for the first time on Dec. 23.

He joined his teammates in a pregame skate about 10 days ago, and on Tuesday, coach Bob Hartley and Heatley decided the All-Star forward was fit to return.

"I feel 100 percent," Heatley said. "I'm really excited. (This) is my opening night."

After leading the Southeast Division for much of the season, Atlanta has dropped to second behind the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Thrashers are tied for ninth in the Eastern Conference with the New York Rangers.

"It's nice to help, but at the same time, that has no bearing on whether I was ready to play or I wasn't ready to play," Heatley said. "It's going to be fun to get going in the middle of a playoff run."

Atlanta continued its recent struggles with a 3-2 road loss to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. The Thrashers are 0-2-1 in their last three games, and have just two wins in their last 14 contests (2-9-2-1).

St. Louis is also struggling of late.

The Blues, who trail the Detroit Red Wings by eight points in the Central Division, fell 3-2 at home to the Dallas Stars on Saturday for their third straight loss.

St. Louis last lost three in a row March 7-11, 2002, and hasn't dropped four straight since a five-game skid from Nov. 13-23, 2001.

The Blues have just one win in their last five games, scoring seven goals over that span. St. Louis has scored more than two goals just twice in its last 12 games.

"We've gotten one-dimensional in our scoring," Blues coach Joel Quenneville said. "We're basically only getting production out of one line. Hopefully, we can get scoring in more areas. We need a change to spread out our production."

The Blues have been playing poorly on the road, with a 1-5 record in their last six. St. Louis has been outscored 16-6 in those contests.

Heatley erhält drei Jahre auf Bewährung

Atlanta, 4. Februar
