NEW YORK - New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur, who posted four consecutive victories, a 1.25 goals-against average and .947 save percentage, has been named NHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 19.
Brodeur edged Ottawa Senators center Radek Bonk (four goals, three assists in three games), Devils center Patrik Elias (four goals, two assists in three games) and Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goaltender Sebastien Caron (3-1-0, 1.51 goals-against average) for the award.
Brodeur began the week with a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers and followed up with a 5-0 shutout win at home over the New York Islanders. In a home-and-home series with the Carolina Hurricanes, Brodeur made 34 saves in a 2-1 Devils win at Carolina Jan. 17 and made 18 stops as the Devils won the home half 5-2, Jan. 18.
Brodeur leads all NHL goaltenders with 25 wins and ranks third in goals-against average (1.93). He is five wins from becoming the first goaltender in League history to record eight consecutive 30-win seasons. He is 14th all-time in career wins (349) and 15th in shutouts (60).
On Thursday, Jan. 16 Brodeur was named to the Eastern Conference roster for the 2003 NHL All-Star Game presented by Nextel, Sunday, Feb. 2, at Sunrise, Fla. (2:30 p.m. ET, ABC, CBC, RDS, NHL Radio). He will be appearing in his seventh career All-Star Game
